Celebrating Delano’s 150th Anniversary: A Community Reflection

Delano, Minnesota, is commemorating a significant milestone: its 150th anniversary. This sesquicentennial offers an opportunity to reflect on our town’s rich history and the enduring spirit that defines our community.

A Journey Through Time

Founded in 1868 and incorporated in 1876, Delano has grown from a modest settlement into a thriving city. Our town’s motto, “The Spirit of Community,” encapsulates the essence of Delano—a place where neighbors support one another and collective efforts drive progress.

Honoring Our Heritage

To celebrate this landmark anniversary, the city has introduced the ‘Spirit of Community Trail.’ This trail features 16 sites marked by bronze medallions and plaques, each highlighting a significant aspect of Delano’s history. Residents and visitors can embark on this self-guided tour to gain insights into the people and events that have shaped our community. The trail is a testament to our commitment to preserving and honoring our heritage.

Community Engagement

In addition to the historical trail, various events and projects are planned throughout the year to engage the community. One such initiative is the Community Mural Paint Project, where residents of all ages can contribute to a large-scale mosaic mural. This collaborative artwork will be unveiled at the Annual Community Art Show in October 2026 and will find a permanent home in the Delano Public Library. It’s a beautiful representation of our collective creativity and unity.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate this milestone, it’s also a time to look forward. Delano continues to grow, attracting new residents and businesses while maintaining the small-town charm that makes it special. Our schools are recognized for excellence, and community events like the annual Fourth of July celebration—the oldest and largest in Minnesota—continue to bring us together.

Delano’s 150th anniversary is more than a commemoration of the past; it’s a celebration of our present and a beacon for our future. Here’s to the next 150 years of community, growth, and shared success.
